Energy Reduction

The new Nissan Stadium is designed with a 360-degree approach to energy conservation, focusing on whole-building life cycle assessment and an integrated design and construction process. From materials to operations to fan transportation, every decision is made with efficiency and emissions reduction in mind.

How we’re reducing energy use:

  • Partnering with Constellation Energy, the nation’s leading producer of clean, carbon-free energy, as the Preferred Energy Provider of Nissan Stadium and the Tennessee Titans
  • Using low-impact concrete mixes to reduce the environmental footprint of construction
  • Encouraging energy-friendly transportation options such as public transit, convenient shuttles from Gray Line, and expanded bike parking
  • Advanced building controls and monitoring technology from Schneider Electric optimize operations, while high-efficiency lighting with occupancy and daylight sensors minimizes unnecessary energy use.

The Impact

These efforts will make the new Nissan Stadium more energy-efficient and lower its environmental impact—saving enough energy each year to power more than 1,000 homes.

Water Conservation

The new Nissan Stadium will save nearly 9 million gallons of water every year – enough to fill more than 13 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Rainwater as a Resource

Rainwater from the roof will be captured and stored in massive 400,000-gallon underground cisterns (that’s enough to fill about 12,000 bathtubs!). This reclaimed rainwater will be put to work in three ways:

  • Flushing toilets throughout the stadium
  • Irrigating landscaping and green spaces
  • Cooling the building through the HVAC system

This innovative system will save 6.3 million gallons of potable water annually.

Nissan Stadium will also feature Sloan water-saving fixtures that use 38% less water saving an additional 2.5 million gallons per year while also providing an exceptional guest experience.

The Impact

Sitting on the banks of the Cumberland River, we have a special responsibility to be good stewards of our watershed. Every gallon of water conserved reduces the demand on Nashville’s water treatment systems and helps protect the river that defines our city.

Path to Zero Waste

With over 2 million expected guests each year, the new Nissan Stadium is designed from the ground up to build a path toward zero waste – with a goal of diverting at least 90% of all waste from landfills in the future.

Built for Diversion

Most stadiums treat waste as an afterthought. The new Nissan Stadium makes it a priority from day one:

  • A dedicated Resource Recovery Room – one of the largest material sorting facilities in any NFL stadium – equipped with compactors for organics and recycling, plus a baler for processing materials
  • Strategic bin placement throughout concourses and seating areas to make recycling and composting as easy as tossing trash
  • Behind-the-scenes systems designed to handle up to 20 different material streams, from food scraps to cardboard to batteries

Starting Now

Partnering with Coca-Cola Consolidated and WM, pilot programs at the current Nissan Stadium have already implemented new waste diversion strategies including:

  • 1,348,043 bottles and cans recycled
  • 315,560 pounds of total recycled material
  • 212,986 pounds of composted material from kitchens, suites, and concessions
  • 530,000 pounds diverted from landfill

Minimizing Food Waste, Maximizing Impact

Because most stadium waste comes from food, the new stadium food and beverage partner, Sodexo Live!, ensures the right materials are used so items can be composted or recycled and implements practices to minimize food waste across all concessions.

The Impact

By treating waste as a resource rather than trash, we’re showing that large-scale events can operate responsibly. When our fans leave the stadium, the only thing we want left behind is the memory of a great game.

LEED Gold Certification

The new Nissan Stadium has set the ambitious goal of becoming just the fourth NFL stadium to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification, and the first to achieve LEED Gold under the updated V4 rating system.
