In Nashville Soccer

NASHVILLE — Seventh-seeded Nashville SC made history Friday night with a 3-0 victory over 10th-seeded Inter Miami CF at Nissan Stadium for the team’s first-ever Audi MLS Cup Playoff win.

Nashville became the second expansion team in league history to win a playoff match, as they shut out Miami for the third time in 2020.

Nashville got off to a hot start, scoring two goals in the first 24 minutes of the match. Midfielders Dax McCarty, Mukhtar and Leal all got on the scoresheet. Mukhtar scored a penalty while McCarty and Leal each scored long-range shots off of lengthy dribbles down the middle of the field.

“It was a fabulous performance tonight,” Nashville SC coach Gary Smith said. “It was a real playoff environment. There was some energy and real passion in the game. Looking at the first 20 minutes, I couldn’t have asked for much more from the group.”

Nashville advances to play second-seeded Toronto FC on Tuesday (5 p.m., CT)  in East Hartford, Conn.

“They have playoff experience, championship experience,” Smith said. “We’ll have our hands full, but we’ll have a plan.”
